Grandma Nellie Mecham's War Cake

"This recipe was developed during World War 1 and does not have any eggs, milk or butter in it because at the time these products were not readily available. It's heavy and really good!"
-Susan Mecham

Ingredients:
2 C brown sugar
2 C hot water
2 tsp shortening
3/4 C raisins
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp cloves
3 C flour
1 tsp baking soda (dissolved in 1 T water)

Directions:
Melt brown sugar, hot water and shortening together. Add raisins, salt, cinnamon and cloves. Remove from stove and let it cool (very important. I've tried to make it before it was cooled and it just doesn't work.).
Add flour and baking soda (dissolved in water). Mix and pour into a greased cake pan. Bake for 1 hr at 350 degrees. This can be eaten plain or with a powder sugar and milk glaze.
